H.S. Baseball: Mellin one-hitter lift Nashua North past South

NASHUA — Dominance was on full display on Friday night at Holman Stadium.

Nashua North’s Jake Mellin pitched a one-hitter in the Titans’ 7-0 shutout of Nashua South in the final game of the regular season for both Division I clubs.

The University of Hartford-bound Mellin mesmerized South batters all night, going the distance and striking out nine along the way.

“His pitch count was down, he threw strikes early, and his fastball was live tonight so he got some strikeouts on some missed spots,” said North coach Will Henderson. “He hit enough of his spots that it got to a point where they had to start swinging. He’s pretty good, though. Not a lot of coaching going on there tonight.”

The one hit that Mellin allowed was a Sean Barrows screamer that short-hopped third baseman Dylan Kost. The official scorer in the press box ruled it a hit.

Other than that, the 6-foot-4 righty was untouchable.

“I could hit my spots a little better. Coach was on me about hitting my spots,” said Mellin. “But when I have a nice lead, it just makes it easier on me to be able to throw strikes and put the ball in play instead of trying to strike everybody out like in a close game.”

The ace also reached base all four times he came to bat, adding two base knocks and a run scored.

Parker Jamerson was another spark on offense, going 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.

What stood out more than anything, though, was Mellin’s prowess. Even South coach John Roper has to tip his cap.

“I’m a firm believer in giving props where props are due and I’m a hard critic,’ said the former Cincinnati Reds pitcher. “I think Mellin threw the ball well, kept the ball down a lot, threw a lot of fastballs and we didn’t make the adjustments. I was always told ‘if they don’t make an adjustment, you don’t adjust’ and he did what he had to do right there. He got the win for them, threw with confidence and got ahead. All the things that lead up to a good outing.”

Mellin’s best friend and Panthers ace Jared Maloney took the loss, allowing all seven runs (six earned) over four-plus innings of work. He was relieved in the fifth by Teddy Christie, who pitched three innings of three-hit, no-run ball to close out the game.

North’s big inning came in the fifth, when Matt Fortin led off the inning with walk, followed by singles by Mellin and Kost, all of whom later scored.

The victory locked up a second seed in the Division I tournament for North (14-5), while South (6-12) slipped in as the 16th seed and will travel to Concord to face the Crimson Tide.
