H.S. Girls' Lacrosse: So far, so perfect for Concord
CONCORD — Fluke? Forget it.
Concord topped Division I girls' lacrosse power Londonderry, 12-8, in a regular-season finale Friday at Memorial Field. The Crimson Tide clinched a perfect (16-0) overall record, and proved their stunner that snapped the Lancers' 59-game NHIAA win streak earlier this month wasn't the result of good fortune.
“We know that we deserve to win and be here, and that it's not just luck,” said senior midfielder Jane Symmes, Concord's catalyst with six goals. “It's from hard work and dedication. We all just bring it, together, and just come out to play.”
The Tide (15-0 Div. I) erased a three-goal, first-half deficit. They found their rhythm early in the second half.
Symmes snapped a 5-5 halftime tie with a man-up marker, the first of her five second-half strikes. She spun around freshman Noelle Lambert and beat Sarah Ford (two saves) in 1-on-1 play.
The tally kicked off a four-goal run. Symmes scored three times in the spurt, twice on free-position shots. The Tide finished 4-for-5 on free-position bids, with Jenna Tewksbury (two goals, two assists) and Seneth Waterman (two goals) also scoring off the restart.
“My hat's off to Concord. They're undefeated. We've been there for three years doing it. It's a hard task,” said Londonderry coach Bob Slater, whose three-time defending champion lost to the Tide, 14-12, on May 5.
The Lancers (11-5-1, 10-3 Div. I) were the superior team in the opening 14 minutes, 43 seconds. They possessed the ball for long stretches in 7-on-7 play, showed patience while working for quality shots, and built a 4-1 lead.
Speedy attacker Leah Walter posed problems in coverage. She struck three times, twice on free-position shots that skipped past Haley Schermerhorn (three saves).
Momentum soon turned in Concord's favor. The Tide pulled even at 4-apiece with three goals in less than two minutes. Symmes started the comeback with a shovel shot atop the crease.
Her work on the draw was equally valuable. She won 12 of 22 matchups in the center circle, and three times pieced together runs of three straight draw wins.
But, now, the pressure's on. Concord enters the postseason as the top tournament seed.
“Now the real test begins,” Symmes said. “We all want it — so bad.”
