BOW — Devin Calkins is known for his ability to cause problems around the crease.

Bow's attackman reinforced his reputation Thursday against St. Thomas Aquinas, scoring a game-high five goals. Those strikes fueled a critical 8-7 win for the host Falcons in Division II boys' lacrosse.

Calkins & Co. clinched the No. 2 playoff seed as a result. The Falcons (12-2 Div. II) entered the regular-season finale tied for second place with their Dover guests, expected to secure the tournament 3-seed.

“They just give me the ball in the crease and I go for it,” the sophomore sniper said. “I don't try to force anything.”

Matt Sanford (two goals) and Mike Fanaras — also part of Bow's talented attack — sandwiched their markers around the five fired by Calkins.

Two of the five strikes snapped a tie. Two others, including his final connection, knotted the score.

“You never want one guy to go to bed scoring five goals on you,” said STA assistant coach Jake Katz, filling in for his father, Barry, who was away for a family matter. “Yeah, he posed a threat to us. All crease guys do.”

STA (11-3 Div. II) built a 5-3 lead shortly after halftime. Eddie Conroy didn't miss from the right wing after dodging to unload a shot in the third quarter's second minute.

The Saints largely controlled play, too. Kevan McClung and long-stick midfielder Caleb Kane (goal) led a solid defensive effort. The Falcons struggled mightily in the second quarter and managed just one shot on goaltender Sebastian Olsen (three saves).

Robert Jenkins (15 saves) was far busier in Bow's net. The senior stopper denied Christian Going, whose attempt from the perimeter targeted the top-left corner with 35 seconds to play.

Noah Schwaegerle (two goals, assist) was turned back on multiple occasions before the Saints made their last-ditch push to tie.

Calkins, of course, placed the Saints in comeback mode. His three third-quarter goals gave Bow a big boost.

“We wanted to prove to ourselves that we could win a big game, down the stretch,” Bow coach Ross Mondello said. “And hopefully get a little momentum for the playoffs.”
