MANCHESTER - A city man is accused of threatening a debt collector with a knife Wednesday afternoon.

Police said two employees of Colortyme, a rent-to-own furnishings company, went to the 114 Pearl St. home of Lloyd Asbury, 54, to collect the payment which was four days late.

Asbury agreed to make the payment, but when the men told him he had to pay a late fee as well, he retracted his offer, said he would pay next month and closed the door.

The Colortyme employees knocked on the door a second time in an effort to convince Asbury to pay the bill. Police said Asbury opened the door, pointed a butcher knife at the face of one of the employees and told them to leave. They immediately left and called police.

Asbury was arrested on a felony criminal-threatening charge.

At his arraignment Thursday in 9th Circuit Court, Manchester District Division, Asbury told the judge he was a disabled veteran with a borderline personality disorder who was just accepted into a 60-day in-patient treatment program at the Veterans Administration Hospital.

He also told the court he was out on bail on another criminal-threatening charge out of Merrimack.

The judge set his bail at $10,000 cash/surety with a probable cause hearing set for June 7.
