Tupelo fundraiser to help send team to Cooperstown

LONDONDERRY — A fundraiser at Tupelo Music Hall this week will help send a talented group of young, local athletes on the trip of a lifetime.

On Thursday evening, the Londonderry Athletic and Fields Association will host a “Dueling Pianos” fundraiser and silent auction. Proceeds from the event will help send the 13 members of Londonderry's 12-year-old all-stars baseball team to the Cooperstown Dreams Park.

“It's sort of a comedy show. The pianists really play off one another, and they'll take requests from the audiences,” event organizer Tracy LaPlante said. “It should be a really fun evening.”

Attendees will also get the chance to try their luck at a silent auction, with a variety of items on the block. Among the offerings are some “very unique pieces of sports memorabilia,” according to LaPlante, including some items from the New England Patriots' first season, jewelry, watches and gift items.

“Londonderry has a long tradition of traveling to Cooperstown for one week each summer,” LaPlante said. The tradition began over a decade ago when Scott Hale, one of the program's founders, took his son's team to the famous baseball park. Hale's son has since graduated from college.

The Cooperstown Dreams Park in New York is home to the American Youth Baseball Hall of Fame and located near the National Baseball Hall of Fame, not to mention the legendary Doubleday Field, where the game was said to have been born “one afternoon in 1839,” according to the organization's website. Around 500,000 visitors travel to the park each year.

Members of this year's 12-year-old all-star team will be announced later this week, with plans to take on Cooperstown at the end of July.

“For a 12-year-old boy who loves baseball, it's like Disneyland,” said LaPlante, whose son played on the town's 11-year-old all-star team last year. “We want to make sure each deserving kid has this opportunity, regardless of their financial situation.”

As of Monday afternoon, tickets for the Thursday fundraiser were still available for $30 per person or $50 per couple. Dinner will be provided by La Carreta Mexican Restaurant.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for the silent auction, with entertainment to commence at 8 p.m.
