Frisbie Hospital volunteer honored for efforts
DOVER – After years of bringing vases of freshly cut flowers from her garden to Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester, a 72-year-old woman was recently recognized as one of the best volunteers in the state for her tireless efforts.
Claire Desrosiers, who volunteers about 100 hours a month at the hospital, was named as the New Hampshire winner of the Home Instead Senior Care Network's Salute to Senior Service Award.
Director of Volunteer Services Antionette Hills, who nominated Desrosiers for the award, said she has certainly made her mark on fellow staffers and patients since she began volunteering in 2004.
Desrosiers said she enjoys bringing in small vases and a few flowers to adorn the desks to brighten the work spaces. She added she'll use silk flowers when fresh ones aren't as available during the cold or wet months.
“I bring in daffodils and narcissus,” Desrosiers said as she pointed out the sprig of red azaleas that adorn the registration desk on the first floor of the hospital.
“Every single person I work for is super,” Desrosiers said.
She said she likes office work and enjoys volunteering at Frisbie since it's just the right size.
Her coworkers appreciate her abilities to complete vast projects, like compiling 42-page informational packets to explain benefits to its employees, she said.
Desrosiers said she also used to bring flowers to her office when she worked at Textron Inc., which has since sold its facilities in Dover and Farmington.
Like the flower vases, Desrosiers is well known for her efforts around the hospital.
“She is perhaps our most industrious, reliable volunteer known to Frisbie Memorial Hospital,” said Hills, adding Desrosiers often does the work of two people around the hospital.
Hill said one patient commented Desrosiers' cheerful personality led to a quicker recovery.
“She has a tremendous work ethic,” Hill said.
She said many department managers feel they would be lost without Desrosiers, who is trusted to complete massive filing projects while remaining organized and uplifting spirits.
Pamela Lord, benefits manager at Frisbie, said she can always count on Desrosiers who always ensures projects are accurate.
As one of 50 winners, Desrosiers earned a spot in the Salute to Senior Service Wall of Fame on the salutetoseniorservice.com website where her nomination story also has been posted, according to a release by Home Instead Senior Care.
This is the first year the Home Instead Senior Care presented the Salute to Senior Service Awards. They received a total of 1,548 nominations. The volunteers had an average age of 76, with the oldest nominee being 106, according to a release by Home Instead Senior Care.
