Top-pick McGuire hurls Fisher Cats to victory
MANCHESTER — Deck dealt.
Toronto's first-round draft pick of 2010, Deck McGuire, allowed only one hit and pitched the Fisher Cats to a 2-0 victory against the Binghamton Mets on Wednesday night.
The big righty, a former ACC Pitcher of the Year at Georgia Tech, outdueled Mets prospect Zack Wheeler on another pleasant night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. McGuire had three strikeouts through 6 2/3 innings, walking three, as New Hampshire (5-8) wrapped up the homestand on a much-needed positive note.
From the second inning through the sixth, McGuire retired 14 of 15 Mets, allowing only a walk to Eric Campbell. The 22-year-old McGuire, who stands 6-foot-6, took full advantage of his large frame and higher-than-average arm slot. That's what the Blue Jays have been looking for, Fisher Cats pitching coach Tom Signore said.
“When he gets on top of the ball, and you see him throwing on a downward plane, he's going to have a good day,” Signore said.
Kevin Howard doubled home Mike McDade (2-for-3) in the fourth inning, tagging Wheeler (0-2) with his lone run. Wheeler (0-2) struck out eight and allowed three hits through six innings.
McGuire (1-2) kept it a 1-0 game, handing the ball to reliever Clint Everts in the seventh. The Fisher Cats collected only four hits all night but plated another run in the eighth on Ryan Goins' gap-liner, scoring John Tolisano. Everts proceeded to fan four, and Ron Uviedo worked the ninth to notch his fourth save.
New Hampshire opens a four-game series at New Britain on Thursday as lefty Brett Cecil (0-2, 6.94 ERA) makes his third start for the Fisher Cats. Southpaw Logan Darnell (2-0, 0.90 ERA) goes for his third straight win for the Rock Cats.
