MANCHESTER - Contrary to a witness account, a single gunman fired shots at police Officer Daniel Doherty during a confrontation last week.

Senior Assistant Attorney General Jeffery A. Strelzin said Saturday that Myles Webster of Litchfield was the only person who shot at Doherty Wedesday evening at the intersection of Wayne and Rimmon streets. Doherty was struck five times in the legs and torso and remained at Catholic Medical Center on Saturday. Hospital officials refused to provide Doherty’s condition on Saturday, though police officials said Friday that he was in serious but stable condition after surgery.

Strelzin rebutted claims made by a witness that Webster met up with a white man and that the two shot at Doherty.

“That’s not true. Only one person fired at the officer, and that person is in custody,” Strelzin said.

Webster, a 22-year-old with a lengthy criminal record, was arraigned on an attempted murder charge Thursday and was being held on $1 million bail. He was released from federal prison in January after having served six months for walking away from a halfway house.

He is accused of unloading his weapon at Doherty, firing 15 rounds at the officer. Strelzin would not say whether Doherty fired any shots at Webster, but he did say Webster was not injured.

Jennifer Whitfield, 35, who was allegedly driving a car with Webster, was arrested Friday night on a charge of misusing a propelled vehicle or rental property.

Strelzin said Whitfield, who he said has no known last address, is expected to be arraigned Monday morning. He said she was found in New Hampshire, but he would not say where in the state.

Strelzin refused to say whether or how Whitfield and Webster are associated, why she was driving him around the city at the time of the shooting and whether she was somehow involved in the shooting itself.

Police have said Doherty was hit in the legs and torso by bullets fired from a handgun, but authorities have not elaborated nor said whether the officer was wearing a protective vest.

Police said Saturday that a resident reported receiving a telephone call asking him for donations for Doherty.

“There are no legitimate telephone fundraising drives associated with this incident at this time,” police said in a release. The only legitimate account for Doherty is at Members First Credit Union. Donations can be made payable to the Dan Doherty Benefit Fund and mailed to the credit union at P.O. Box 896, Manchester 03105.

Immediately after the shooting, police had asked the public to be on the lookout for a 2005 bluish-green Hyundai Sonata, with New Hampshire license plate 3140994.

Strelzin said police were able to locate Whitfield independent of the request for help.

“They’d been hot on the trail and found her,” he said. “It was just investigative work.”
