Blaze destroys Northfield home; second fire in two weeks on same street
NORTHFIELD - Fire investigators are trying to determine what caused the blaze that destroyed a two-story brick home on Granite Street Thursday night.
Firefighters were called to 45 Granite St., the home of Ron Martin, at 8:19 p.m. Once on the scene, they found the home fully engulfed in flames, according to Tilton-Northfield Fire Chief Bradley Ober.
No one was hurt in the fire. Authorities were initially told by neighbors, who reported “a large volume of fire,” from the home, that there were two people inside, but firefighters located Martin and quickly determined the home was vacant.
The flames were so intense a ladder truck was needed from the Franklin Fire Department, Ober said.
“We weren't able to attack the interior of the first floor, so we had to use the ladder from up top,” he said.
The home is a complete loss, Ober said. Martin, who had a garage and had ducks and a rabbit living on the property, was at the scene Friday morning with investigators.
“I'm all set,” he said when asked for comment.Police and New Hampshire Fire Marshal Office investigators were on the scene for most of Friday morning. Ober said what caused the fire has not been determined.
“We're not sure yet where in the building the fire started,” he said.
Firefighters were able to save Martin's barn, which had antiques and antique cars inside, Ober said.
It was the second fire in two weeks on the street, but fire officials say the fires were unrelated. The previous fire was caused by a man smoking while on oxygen, authorities said.
The fire was brought under control within an hour, Ober said, and firefighters cleared the scene at 1:45 a.m. Friday.
Franklin, Sanbornton, and Belmont fire fighters assisted in battling the blaze.
