Mass. man to plead guilty in string of Derry burglaries
BRENTWOOD — A Haverhill, Mass., man charged with burglarizing six homes in Derry plans to plead guilty in a deal that will resolve all of his cases pending in superior court.
Joseph Anderson, 27, will appear in Rockingham County Superior Court on Tuesday. He is expected to plead guilty to carrying out burglaries at a half-dozen Derry homes in late 2009 and early 2010.
Anderson was among a group of people arrested by Derry police in 2010 who allegedly worked together to burglarize homes and sell whatever valuables they took.
Terms of his plea deal have not been made public, but Anderson could face up to 3½ to seven years in state prison on each of the burglary charges.
Anderson has been in a drug rehabilitation program in Manchester over the last year while free on $25,000 personal recognizance bail.
In July, defense lawyer Donald Blaszka was given more time by a judge to review evidence in all the cases and to talk about a plea deal that would resolve all cases.
Anderson was indicted three times last year on charges of burglary, theft by unauthorized taking and conspiracy to commit burglary. Police say Anderson broke into homes between December 2009 and January 2010, court documents say.
He was identified by Derry police late last year as being part of a burglary ring in Derry that targeted high-end electronics and valuables. The stolen items were resold to local pawn shops and second-hand stores, which proved to be the group's undoing, according to a police affidavit.
Police used pawn shop slips to link the stolen merchandise to the burglary suspects. Among those identified was David Pento, 24, of Derry, who is facing charges in connection with seven residential burglaries in Derry and an attempted burglary in Londonderry.
Lawyers for Pento have also been trying to negotiate a plea deal that would resolve all the charges in his case, court documents show.
The loosely knit burglary ring has led to the arrest of four others who allegedly worked with Pento at various times, according to police affidavits. Most of those cases have ended in guilty pleas and jail time.
