Our Gourmet: It’s been many, many years since I had been to the original Hart’s Turkey Farm in Meredith. Hart’s — something of a landmark in Meredith — has now come to the Queen City and if a recent night is any indication, is likely to be popular here, too.

Ambiance: 16.5 of 20

OG: The restaurant is located at the former Sheraton, soon-to-be Clarion at the traffic circle at the Amoskeag Bridge. Formerly a Hooters, the restaurant has been redone and is now a nice comfortable space. The new Hart’s is definitely a family restaurant, so be prepared for families, kids and the noise that comes with them, although the setup of the restaurant makes it possible to feel like one has some privacy. The restaurant, divided into two dining rooms and a separate bar, is clean, bright and airy, with comfortable booths and freestanding tables in light wood. The walls are painted relaxing neutral hues. I found the overall effect to be pleasing and comfortable. Score: 8

The Dining Companion: Wow, what a nice transformation from the Hooters that used to be in that location. It’s now very tastefully done, without a TV to be seen. The ambience is definitely family-friendly, unlike the prior tenant. Score:8.5

Appetizer: 16 of 20

OG: There are quite a few appetizers to choose from, with and without turkey. I started with the macaroni and cheese bites, ($5.99) a guilty pleasure I recently discovered on Cape Cod. Not exactly haute cuisine, they’re bits of macaroni and cheese, breaded and deep fried. Macaroni and cheese bites make me believe that anything can be deep fried and be delicious. The ones served at Hart’s were quite good. Score: 7.5

TDC: I decided to stay with the turkey theme and ordered the turkey tempura ($6.99), tender chunks of turkey deep fried in a light tempura-type batter, served with duck and hot mustard sauces. Not exactly knowing what to expect, I was pleasantly surprised when I bit into one. Score: 8.5

Entrée: 17 of 20

OG: When in Rome … It seemed wrong to have anything other than turkey for my entrée, although Hart’s has red meat and seafood as well as salads and sandwiches. I opted for a turkey Marsala ($15.99) which turned out to be very nicely done. The turkey was lightly breaded and had just the right amount of Marsala sauce. Some places drown the food in the sauce, but Hart’s starts with a nice piece of turkey and lets the sauce complement it rather than overcome it. Served with sliced, fresh sautéed mushrooms, the turkey Marsala was every bit as good as its veal cousin – but without the guilt. Score: 8.5

TDC: I might not have been in Rome, but decided I was going to be eating from the farm, so I ordered the regular turkey plate ($15.98) with all the fixin’s. It came with 5½ ounces of white-meat turkey, stuffing, butternut squash, and mashed potatoes with gravy. The turkey was delicious, the stuffing was rather bland (but I’m measuring against some of the best of homemades I have tasted), and the gravy was very good. Score: 8.5

Dessert: 17.5/20

OG: Hart’s has a wide assortment of desserts ranging from blueberry pies to chocolate mousse. The offerings are brought out on a dessert tray, so it’s that much more difficult to just say "no." My choice was Death by Chocolate ($4.59), a chocolate cake over a chocolate pudding, topped with a layer of ricotta-like cheese accented with crushed toffee bars. This dessert is absolutely sinful, not to mention huge — I could hardly make my way through it after a full meal. Score: 8.5

TDC: Mocha mousse with a touch of Amaretto was the perfect end to a good meal. It was an airy mousse with a subtle texture. It wasn’t the largest desert I have ever ordered, but it was just enough. Score: 9

Service: 18/20

OG: Our server Carolyn was competent and unfailingly cheerful. She checked on us regularly — without hovering — and served everything with a smile. The meal, from appetizers to dessert was perfectly paced. Score: 9

TDC: When ordering a pre-dinner drink, there was a mix-up on my order. When I mentioned it, Carolyn quickly took care of the problem and was back with the proper beverage. The manager also stopped by to apologize and make sure it was right. That’s that little extra touch that makes the difference. Score: 9
