Kick up your heels this March when "Riverdance," the thunderous celebration of Irish music, song and dance that has tapped on stages around the globe, performs at the Verizon Wireless Arena at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 9.
Tickets to the show will go on sale at noon Monday, Jan. 25. Patrons may purchase tickets online at www.verizonwirelessarena.com, at the venue's box office on Elm Street or by calling Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000. Cost ranges from $35 to $75 (service charges may apply).
"Since 1996, the success of "Riverdance" in North America has gone beyond our wildest dreams," said producer Moya Doherty. "The fact that the show continues to draw and excite audiences 14 years after its debut in Dublin is a tribute to every dancer, singer, musician, staff and crew member who have dedicated themselves to the show."
Composed by Bill Whelan, produced by Doherty and directed by John McColgan, to date, "Riverdance" has played more than 10,000 performances and been seen live by more than 22 million people in more than 350 venues throughout 40 countries across 4 continents.
"They have traveled well over 600,000 miles, played to a worldwide television audience of 2 billion, sold over 3 million copies of the Grammy Award-winning CD (which was certified platinum in the United States) and over 10 million videos, making it one of the best-selling entertainment videos in the world." show officials said.
"Riverdance," which premiered at the Point Theatre, Dublin, in 1995, stems from a seven-minute dance segment on the 1994 "Eurovision Song Contest" in Europe. It quickly blossomed into a full-scale production that began an international success.
There have been many milestones along the way, including the distinction of being the largest Western musical to play China.
In addition, 100 "Riverdance" performers took the stage before 85,000 people at the 2004 Special Olympics in Dublin. The production marked a 10th anniversary celebration at Radio City Music Hall, and dancers took to Red Square and the Great Wall of China for other memorable shows.
