Derry teen to belt it out at the Garden

Emily Dellisola, a sophomore and member of the varsity cheerleading squad at Pinkerton Academy of Derry, will sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” before tonight’s Bruins game at the TD Garden in Boston.

Emily Dellisola of Derry will be in the spotlight today.

The sophomore from Pinkerton Academy was chosen last week to sing the national anthem before the start of tonight’s 7 p.m. National Hockey League game between the Boston Bruins and the Florida Panthers at TD Garden.

Dellisola is expected to sing before a sell-out crowd of 17,565 fans. The game will be televised tonight on NESN.

“I’m so excited,” said Dellisola, a 15-year-old cheerleader who has sung the national anthem many times this season at the Pinkerton Academy basketball games.

Dellisola said she’s never attended a Bruins’ game.

“When I was younger, I did go to one Celtics game,” she said. “I’m a fan of the Boston Bruins and (Zdeno) Chara is my favorite player on the team.”

Dellisola gives a big assist to her mom, Lisa, for creating this opportunity.

“I sang the national anthem last summer for the (New Hampshire) Fisher Cats and my mom sent the video to the Bruins who were looking for people to sing at some of their games,” said Dellisola.

Her audition in front of the Bruins’ brass took place last August and according to Dellisola’s dad, Scott, the Bruins called Emily last Tuesday and invited her to sing before tonight’s game.

“Words can’t explain this,” said her father. “I was on the field when she sang for the Fisher Cats and it was awesome. I actually got emotional and cried because I was so proud and happy for Emily. I’m sure I’ll shed a few tears at the Bruins’ game too.”

Emily said she will be accompanied today by her parents and grandparents, her sister Jenna and friend, Whitney Leyland.
