Sauna fire at UNH's Whittemore Center contained

January 12. 2014 11:38PM

DURHAM - Firefighters were busy Sunday night battling a sauna fire at the Whittemore Center on the campus of the University of New Hampshire.

Durham Fire Chief Corey Landry said his department was called to the Whittemore Center, 128 Main St., just after 9 p.m.  Landry said the building's sprinkler system did a good job of knocking down the flames, and firefighters were able to contain the fire to the one sauna room.

"There was some water in the basement, and smoke throughout the Whittemore and the Rec Center," said Landry. "They are planning to get a cleaning crew in there in the morning."

Landry said the cause of the fire is under investigation, but is not considered suspicious.

Fire crews from Lee and Newmarket assisted Durham at the scene, and Madbury firefighters covered the Durham station. Crews were at the Whittemore Center just over two hours. No injuries were reported.
