This week's rare bird alert

This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Wednesday, Jan. 1.

A short-eared owl was seen in Laconia on Dec. 28, but has not been relocated.Snowy owls continued to be reported in New Hampshire during the past week including two along the coast in Rye, four in the Hampton and Seabrook marsh areas, and two seen from McIntyre Road at the Pease International Tradeport.

A light-morph rough-legged hawk was seen from Short Road in Newington on Dec. 28.

A pair of Barrow's goldeneyes was seen near 250 Commercial St. on the Merrimack River in Manchester on Dec. 26.

A female Barrow's goldeneye has been reported several times from Sewall's Falls on the Merrimack River in Concord during the past week.

A black-headed gull was seen at coastal North Hampton on Dec. 29.

A glaucous gull was seen at Hampton Beach State Park and one was seen in Hampton Harbor, both on Dec. 29.

An Iceland gull was seen in Hampton Harbor, and one was seen on Eel Pond in Rye, both on Dec. 26.

Four razorbills were seen from Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on Dec. 29.

A surf scoter was reported from the Connecticut River in Hanover on Dec. 30.

Two Lapland longspurs, seven snow buntings, and 50 horned larks were seen at the Nashua Airport on Dec. 28.

Over 100 snow buntings were reported from the coast during the past week, a flock of about 15 was seen along Martha's Way in Bedford on Dec. 30, and a flock of over 30 was seen at Boggy Meadows Farm in Walpole on Dec. 31.

A merlin was seen in Seabrook on Dec. 25, and two peregrine falcons were seen in Hampton on Dec. 31. A peregrine falcon was seen in Nashua on Dec. 30.

Four immature bald eagles were seen on the Connecticut River near the Plainfield/West Lebanon town line on Dec. 29.

An adult male northern harrier was seen in Rye on Dec. 29.

Two American pipits were seen at Ragged Neck in Rye on Dec. 26.

A gray catbird was reported from Exeter on Dec. 25.

Two turkey vultures were seen in Exeter on Dec. 31.

Three yellow-rumped warblers were seen at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on Dec. 29.

An adult northern goshawk and a hermit thrush were seen in Etna on Dec. 25.

A flock of 15 eastern bluebirds was seen at a residence in Merrimack on Dec. 27.

Highlights of the Crawford Notch Christmas Bird Count held Dec. 21 included six ruffed grouse, a black-backed woodpecker, a northern shrike, seven boreal chickadees, and a merlin.

Highlights of the Keene Christmas Bird Count held Dec. 22 included a rusty blackbird, a yellow-rumped warbler, a red-shouldered hawk, a hermit thrush, a winter wren, a great blue heron, a northern shrike, two northern flickers, three barred owls, and six brown-headed cowbirds.

Highlights of the Grafton-Bristol Christmas Bird Count held Dec. 28 included a sharp-shinned hawk, two belted kingfishers, 45 snow buntings, and a pine siskin.

Highlights of the Nashua-Hollis Christmas Bird Count held Dec. 28 included a sharp-shinned hawk, two winter wrens, a yellow-bellied sapsucker, three northern flickers, and two yellow-rumped warblers.

Highlights of the Laconia Christmas Bird Count held Dec. 29 included a ring-necked duck, two greater scaup, one lesser scaup, six common loons, two sharp-shinned hawks, two belted kingfishers, five red-bellied woodpeckers, two yellow-bellied sapsuckers, a northern shrike, two Bohemian waxwings, three snow buntings, and a red-winged blackbird.
