Portsmouth's Memorial Bridge named one of Top 10 bridges of 2013

PORTSMOUTH — The new Memorial Bridge has been open for a few short months and work continues to fine tune its operation, but it is already earning national recognition.

Roads and Bridges magazine named the Memorial Bridge one of the Top 10 Bridges of 2013 in North America based on project challenges, impact to the region and scope of the work.

In its November issue, the magazine noted the bridge’s gusset-less steel truss and the quick design and construction time of 18 months from demolition to opening. The magazine also noted the use of a metalized zinc coating and the cold blending of steel.
The Memorial Bridge project also received the 2013 Gold Award for Highway/Infrastructure, a New England regional project award from Design-Build Institute of America.

The project team was honored at a Dec. 11 awards ceremony in Framingham, Mass., which included the New Hampshire and Maine departments of transportation, Archer Western Contractors and HNTB Corp.
Archer Western Contractors continues work on the bridge that will result in night closures four nights this week, beginning tonight. The bridge will be closed to all traffic from midnight to 5 a.m. tonight through Friday at 5 a.m.
From 7 p.m. to midnight on those nights, traffic will be restricted to one alternating lane in each direction. Locals and visitors to the city may have also noticed the bridge lit in various colors over recent weeks as the community-funded bridge illumination project reaches completion in time for the city’s First Night celebrations on New Year’s Eve.
