Salem-area News in Brief

Economic future subject of forum

WINDHAM -- Town and state officials will gather in Windham next week to discuss the town’s economic future.

The event, which will be hosted by Michael Bergeron of the state Department of Resources and Economic Development (DRED), is scheduled for Nov. 7 in the community development room at Windham Town Hall. The forum, which is open to the public, will begin at 7 p.m.

Bergeron said the discussion will include how to attract new businesses to Windham and what qualities most companies look for when considering locations for their new businesses.

Audience members will also have a chance to get their questions answered by area experts.

Numbers expected for school project
SALEM -- More detailed costs of a potential high school renovation project could be determined as soon as this week.

Harvey Construction of Bedford, the firm hired as the construction manager earlier this month, has begun looking at the high school to determine materials and the final scope of the project.

The project, originally estimated at $75 million, will go before voters in March.

Superintendent Michael Delahanty said, however, that Harvey Construction could provide more detailed costs to the school building committee this week.

“They are expected to provide our committee with a closer estimate for the cost of the high school project,” said Delahanty. “The committee members will meet and look at the costs, and then we will make some decisions regarding whether the materials identified are the right types of materials or if there are cost savings to see if we are in the ballpark of the original estimate.”

The building committee will then report those findings back to the School Board.
