Children's Museum seeks competitors for its pizza challenge

DOVER — Once again, the Children’s Museum of New Hampshire challenges area restaurants to prepare their best pizza to wow crowds and support programs during the year.
The 5th annual pizza fest and silent auction is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 16, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at 6 Washington St. Advance tickets are available online at www.pizzafest.eventbrite.com for $10 for adults, $7 for children ages 3 to 10, and children under 2 are free. At the door, tickets are $12 and $9.
As of this week, six restaurants — Kendall Pond Pizza II, La Festa Brick & Brew Pizzeria, Papa Gino’s, Papa Jay’s Pizza, Terra Cotta Pasta and Uno Chicago Grill of Dover — have agreed to participate, but the museum hopes to hear from other establishments around the Seacoast, said Heidi Duncanson, director of marketing for the museum.
Duncanson said they hope to get up to a dozen restaurants, as they have in the past. The museum has reached out to establishments in Portsmouth, Rochester and Somersworth.
Duncanson said any venue can take part in the event. She cited the Spaghetti Stain, which brought French bread pizza even though it doesn’t have pizza on the regular menu.
“They wanted to participate and support us,” Duncanson said.
While participants are required to offer cheese pizza and one other flavor, Duncanson said most bring three or four varieties — including roasted vegetables, honey barbecue chicken and dessert pizzas, which are a big hit.“They don’t tell us the pizzas there will bring,” Duncanson said. “They like that element of surprise.”
Duncanson said many restaurants create a special pizza just for the night.
“You can try pizza from six to 10 restaurants,” Duncanson said, adding the pizzas are cut up into “tasting slices.” Area residents help choose the best pizzas in the following categories: Kids’ Choice Cheese and Grown-Ups’ Choice. Meanwhile, a group of experts will select the Judges’ Pick for Best Pizza, Best Crust and Most Creative Toppings.
Participants can enjoy beer from Smuttynose Brewing Company, which will be available for purchase, as well as water, juice and other beverages.
In between touring the museum, participants can bid for a variety of items — including sports and ski passes, original art, tickets to area attractions, toys and books for kids and restaurant gift certificates — in the silent auction.
“This is one of our lower-priced, family friendly fundraisers,” Duncanson said, adding proceeds will help offset general operational expenses for the museum.
