Nashua North's Lynch sets sights on track success

Mike Lynch

Mike Lynch of Nashua North signed his track and field letter of intent to attend the University of New Hampshire this fall, but the senior still has one more goal to attain before he graduates from high school.

"UNH can wait," Lynch said without hesitation. "We won the outdoor track championship my sophomore season (2011) and now I'll do anything I can to help our team win another one. We won't settle for anything less."

Lynch, the defending outdoor discus and shot put Division I state champion, is off to a strong start this month.

His 143-9 mark in the discus is tops in Division I and he ranks second to teammate Deric Wagner (49-4 1/4) in the shot put with a 47-5 heave.

"Unacceptable," he said of each distance marks. "I'm very capable of doing better. I haven't been as focused as I was last year. It all comes down to technique and it's something that will come back over time. The season is still young and I'll be throwing a lot better than I've shown so far this year."

Lynch said having Wagner as a teammate has served both athletes very well.

"We're best of friends, we work out together all the time," said Lynch. "It's very competitive. I've only lost to Deric twice and I've hated every second of it. He's my friend, but I still hate losing to him."

When reminded that Wagner currently has a better shot put distance mark than he has, Lynch said "yeah, but if it wasn't for me, Deric wouldn't be doing track. I was a better thrower than he was when he first tried track, but after working out with him, he's really improved over a short period of time. He's a very big part of our team."

Next fall, Lynch will be competing in track and field for UNH head coach Jim Boulanger.?"He's coming to do the football-track combo," Boulanger said. "I liked what I saw of him. I think he could make a good hammer thrower and discus thrower. He's athletic and he's got good feet and you need to have good movement for those. I think he'll be able to handle the 16-pound shot in college. I'm looking forward to working with him."

Lynch said he also plans to continue his football career with the Wildcats. He was an All-State selection for Nashua North last season as an offensive tackle for the Titans.

He also played defensive end during his three-year varsity tenure for North.
