PELHAM — Pelham police rescued a lost dog early Monday morning, reuniting the dog with its owners.

Officers with the Pelham Police Department were following leads on a few suspicious vehicles around 1 a.m. Monday when they were greeted by dog owners from the neighborhood who were looking for their boxer mix named Freckles.

Police helped check for the dog, which was later spotted sitting on the Willow Street bridge. When approached, the dog ran toward Beaver Brook and fell through the ice before running into the woods.

Police became concerned for the dog’s life because of frigid temperatures, and searched the area using a thermal imaging camera. Officers located the dog on the tip of an island in Beaver Brook.

Officer Bruce Vieira found a frozen section of the brook and crossed the ice on his hands and knees to get closer to the dog. He safely brought the dog back across the ice.

Officers say Freckles was wet, cold and tired, but OK overall.
