“Flashdance” will take over the MCTP Theatre in Manchester this month.

MANCHESTER — Cue the music: It’s the heart-racing story of a welder by day and a quick-footed “flashdancer” by night.

The 1980s Paramount Pictures movie that made Jennifer Beals a break-out star takes the spotlight in a Queen City production this weekend. The Second Stage Professional Company, a part of Manchester Community Theatre Players (MCTP), will present “Flashdance: The Musical” at the MCTP Theatre, 698 Beech St., Friday through July 13.

“You will love the music and choreography set to this iconic score,” said MCTP Vice-President Tom Anastasi. “You’ll recognize many of the songs that became huge hits, including ‘Maniac’ (Michael Sembello), ‘Manhunt’ (Karen Kamon), ‘Gloria’ (Laura Branigan), ‘I Love Rock & Roll’ (Joan Jett and the Blackhearts) and, of course, the title song: ‘Flashdance ... What a Feeling’ (Irene Cara). To anyone who loves ‘80s music this is the perfect date play to go to.”

The dancing romance centers on Alex, who dreams of going to the prestigious Shipley Dance Academy, but for now, she works a welding job during the day and as an exotic dancer at night. When a romance complicates her ambitions, she harnesses it to drive her dream.

“One of the most common questions I get is, ‘Will you have the famous shower dance scene from the movie on stage?’ Yes! I can’t wait for the audience to see how we do it,” said Kaplan of the iconic water-drenching sequence.

The Second Stage production is directed by Alan D. Kaplan, with music direction by John Carey and choreography by Loren Hallett.

Show times 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays at the MCTP Theatre, located at the North End Montessori School. Tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for ages 65 and older, and $10 for students 18 and under. For more information, visit or call 800-838-3006.
