JAFFREY — A 20-year-old Texas man had to be carried off Mount Monadnock when he became severely cramped early Friday afternoon, according to Fish and Game officials.
Kevin Cross Jr. of Round Rock, Texas, was hiking with a friend to the summit on the steep Spellman Trail. While descending the mountain, Cross suffered severe cramps and could not continue.
The pair called for help from park staff at 1:55 p.m., Fish and Game officials said.
A mountain patrol manager who also is an emergency medical technician tried to hydrate Cross in the hopes he could continue on his own.
Determining that Cross had to be brought down off the mountain, Fish and Game conservation officers were called at 5:15 p.m. to perform the rescue operation.
The group reached park headquarters at 9:25 p.m. and Cross was transported to Monadnock Community Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, officials said.
