Police: Serious car crash closes all northbound lanes of I-93 in Canterbury Saturday night

August 19. 2017 10:01PM

CANTERBURY — A serious car crash closed all northbound lanes of Interstate 93 in Canterbury Saturday night, State Police officials confirmed.

The road was closed at 7:43 p.m. and still remained closed to traffic two and a half hours later, officials said.

Witnesses were saying the vehicles in the crash appeared to have been traveling at a high rate of speed as affected vehicles were “literally turned around” on the turnpike.

The accident took place just north of Exit 17 at milepost 45.8 on I-93 according to State Police Supervisor Mark Carter.

“That’s all we have at this time; it’s obviously significant given how long the roadway has been closed,” Carter said after 9:30 p.m. Saturday. “I’m sure we’ll be putting out a release on it in a few hours.”

Motorists on I-93 Northbound were treated to message boards saying the road was closed and urging drivers to take an off-ramp up to Exit 17 to go farther north on roads off the turnpike.

Both the Department of Transportation and the New Hampshire Troopers Association alerted social media watchers to the turnpike closure on their Twitter accounts.
