SALEM — Political leaders in Salem and at the State House in Concord reacted with sadness on Friday to the passing of Ronald J. Belanger, 78, a 13-term state representative and former Salem selectman.
A retired police officer from Chelsea, Mass., and a graduate of Bunker Hill Community College in Charlestown, Mass., Belanger was first elected to the New Hampshire House in 1992.
“Susan and I are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Representative Belanger,” said Senate President Chuck Morse, R-Salem. “Salem is a better place to live because of his years of service in Concord and as a leader in the community.”
Gov. Chris Sununu, a Salem native, reacted to the loss while attending the National Governor’s Conference in Providence, R.I.
“Ron was a giant in Salem politics and made immeasurable contributions to his community as a selectman and planning board member, and to New Hampshire as a state representative,” said Sununu. “He was a longtime friend of the Sununu family, and we will miss his friendship and dedication to constituent service.”
Details surrounding his death and funeral arrangements were not immediately available.
