MANCHESTER - Ohio Gov. John Kasich will be the featured speaker this fall at the Nackey S. Loeb School of Communications' First Amendment program, the school announced this weekend.
Republican Kasich, who finished second to Donald J. Trump in the 2016 New Hampshire Presidential Primary, follows the now-President in appearing at the Loeb School event. Trump spoke in 2015.
The event has attracted a host of national notables over the years, including U.S. Sen. John McCain, Bill O'Reilly, formerly of Fox News, and national columnists George Will and Howard Fineman. This year's program will be the 16th in the annual series.
The event is scheduled for Thursday evening, Nov. 15, at the Palace Theatre in Manchester. Its presenting sponsor is People's United Bank.
Coming just a week after the nation's midterm congressional elections, the event may provide Kasich, who has not ruled out a 2020 presidential bid, with a prominent political stage.
The event honors First Amendment freedoms and New Hampshire residents and organizations, nominated by the public, who work to protect free speech and free press. Past honorees have included newspaper editors, a New Hampshire attorney general, slain New Hampshire journalist James Foley, citizen legislators and activists, outspoken school board members, and a firefighters union that blew the whistle on a secretive insurance program.
The nonprofit, nonpartisan Loeb School was founded in 1999 by Nackey S. Loeb, the late president and publisher of the New Hampshire Union Leader and Sunday News. Its mission is to promote understanding and appreciation of the First Amendment and to foster interest, integrity and excellence in journalism and communication.
Loeb School classes, almost all free-of-charge, have attracted students of all ages, from middle-schoolers to retirees. Instructors from media outlets and businesses around the state teach topics such as the First Amendment, journalism, photography, broadcasting, social media and public speaking. The school also offers some fee-based workshops.
In addition to People's United Bank, a growing list of 2018 First Amendment Event sponsors includes: McLane Middleton law firm, Brady Sullivan Properties, U.S. Trust; Consolidated Communications; Elliot Health System; BAE Systems; Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences University; Merchant's Automotive Group; Amoskeag Beverages; Anagnost Investments; Bar Harbor Bank & Trust; Bellwether Community Credit Union; Sean and Kirsten Mahoney; St. Mary's Bank; Bernstein Shur Group; the Business and Industry Assocation; and Douglas, Leonard & Garvey.
Media partners are the New Hampshire Union Leader, WMUR-TV and WGIR radio.
