Franklin man gets 50 years for child porn

January 19. 2018 8:21PM

FRANKLIN — A 33-year-old Franklin man was sentenced to 50 years in federal prison Friday for producing child pornography.

A jury had convicted Brad Smith on the charge after a three-day trial last April.

Federal law enforcement officials in Lafayette, La., began investigating Smith after receiving a tip that an email address associated with Smith was distributing child pornography.

Officers traced that address to a farm in Breaux Bridge, La., where Smith was living at the time.

With Smith’s consent, federal officials analyzed Smith’s computer hard drive and uncovered a series of videos Smith had created.

This probe determined Smith had filmed himself engaging in multiple sex acts with a Loudon child who was 3 1/2 years old.

“This case, which involved dedicated work from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) both in Louisiana and in New Hampshire, as well as local, state and other federal law enforcement, serves as a testament to what persistent, professional investigative work can achieve,” said Michael Shea, acting special agent in charge at Homeland Security Investigations in Boston.

“HSI is proud to be part of the team that helped bring about justice in this truly disturbing case of child victimization.”
