DACA deal: The ‘wall’ in exchange for ‘amnesty’

September 17. 2017 6:05PM

It would be wrong to blame President Donald Trump for his about-face on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

His campaign stance as an immigration hardliner was never credible. He was simply repeating lines that got the most applause at his rallies. Supporters who counted on Trump to follow through were always fooling themselves.

When Trump gave Congress six months to find a legislative solution for immigrants brought here illegally as children, we said there was a deal to be made in exchange for increased border security.

Trump has undermined his own leverage, and seems willing to accept any additional funds for border security, including maintenance on existing border fences, as fulfilling his promise to build a wall.

Congressional Republicans need not be bound by whatever deal Trump strikes with Democratic leaders. They should be able to include real border security, and a visa tracking system.

Trump’s MAGA brigade attacked past Republican efforts to address immigration as “amnesty.” What will they call providing 800,000 illegal immigrants with a path to citizenship?
