LONDONDERRY — A Derry man is accused of embezzling from an auto business he once owned and for which he later worked as a general manager, police said.

John “Jack” Leonhard, 55, of 10 Ezekiel Drive, was arrested this week on one charge of embezzlement after police alleged he stole about $26,000 in the past year from Lefebvre's Auto Repair on Rockingham Road.

Leonhard has been an employee at the business since 1997 and according to police owned the shop before selling it back to the original proprietor.

Det. Christopher Olson said the business owner told police in December that they had noticed money was missing about the time Leonhard had been out of work for medical reasons.

Police said that in 2016 the business was about $20,000 short in reported revenue and had similar issues in 2017.

Leonhard had relinquished the role of overseeing the firm’s finances in August when he went on medical leave and the business found multiple bills that were unaccounted for in its records, Olson said.

The shop sent the bills out to customers and found the customers had paid Leonhard directly, predominantly in cash, police said.

Officers said one customer repaid Leonhard by paving his driveway in lieu of the bill.

Police say Leonhard was cooperative and forthcoming with information during their investigation and that there’s nothing to suggest the alleged embezzlement began before 2016.

Leonhard is facing a Class A felony charge. He was released on $5,000 personal recognizance bail and is scheduled for arraignment Feb. 20 in Derry Circuit Court.
